BIBLICAL INFORMATION COURSES

BI501 INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE: An exhaustive study of the roots of the Christian Bible. Includes an  examination of various versions and why they are available today.

BI503 SCIENTIFIC CREATIONISM: An in-depth examination of the case for creationism. Provides the student with information and analysis which refutes the evolutionary model 

BI513 BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY: An investigation of the major archaeological excavations of the Near East and of the artifacts unearthed from them. Provides a better understanding of the historical period encompassed by both Testaments.

BI514 GEOGRAPHY OF THE HOLY LAND: A study of the importance of the roll that geography played in the history of the Biblical lands.

BI515 OLD TESTAMENT ARCHAEOLOGY: A study of the major archaeological excavations of the Neat East and how they relate to the Old Testament.

BI516 ANCIENT NEAR EAST HISTORY I: An in-depth examination of the ancient nations of Assyria, Babylon, Sumeria, the Cimmerians, and the Kassites. A course necessary for a proper understanding of the dynamics which the Israelites encountered later as they developed into a nation.

BI517 ANCIENT NEAR EAST HISTORY II: A continuation of BI516, with special emphasis on Assyria and the latter Babylonian Empires.

BI520 THE CHRISTIAN LIFE: The hindrances to and provisions for the Christian life are considered.  The application of the Biblical principles are considered in our everyday life under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

BI521 HERMENEUTICS: A detailed study of the  principles of biblical interpretation from the original languages, with special emphasis on the practice and application of those principles to selected Scriptures from both Testaments. Old Testament majors will concentrate on interpretation from the Old Testament and New Testament majors will concentrate on the New Testament. Students with a background in biblical Greek and Hew are  expected to utilize that knowledge.  

BI530 PERSIA AND THE HEBREWS: A detailed examination of the relationship between the nation of Persia and the Hews while in captivity and beyond, including the development of customs, traditions, and rites which Jesus knew while ministering on earth.          

BI531 NEW TESTAMENT ARCHAEOLOGY: This course acquaints the student with the major discoveries which provide a sound basis for the theological and historical Christian faith.

BI533 GREEK AND ROMAN CIVILIZATIONS: Examination of the characteristics of the Greek and Roman civilizations and their relationship to the people of the Bible.

BI541-BI542 SURVEY OF CHURCH HISTORY: Examines the birth and spread of Christianity from its beginnings to the modern era. Examines the rise of various denominations and separate churches and the influence of  secular movements and events.

BI611 BIBLE STUDY METHODS: This course will enable the student to study the Bible independently using a variety of methods. 

BI652 MANNERS AND CUSTOMS: A study of the manners and customs of the people in Palestine, Egypt, Syria, Babylonia and the Sinai Peninsula in preparation for Biblical emphasis.

BL511 BIBLICAL LANGUAGES STUDY METHODS: A course designed to provide the student with specific tools to use as he/she becomes involved in Hew and Greek

BL512, BL513, BL514 NEW TESTAMENT GREEK I, II, III: One-year sequence of Koine Greek. First Semester emphasizes the use of biblical languages through study tools such as lexicons, concordances, and Greek  based commentaries. Second Semester emphasizes language, grammar, and syntax.  Third Semester includes readings from the Greek New Testament and  vocabulary building.

BL515 EXEGESIS OF II TIMOTHY: Practical application of the Greek language skills by performing an in-depth exegesis of this epistle from the Greek New Testament.  PREREQUISITE: One year of Greek or its equivalent.

BL519 EXEGESIS OF COLOSSIANS: Practical application of the Greek language skills by performing an  in-depth exegesis of this epistle by utilization and translation of the Greek New Testament.

BL521, BL522, BL523 HEW FUNDAMENTALS I, II, III: Rudiments of the language, grammar, and syntax. Includes proper use of exegetical tools such as lexicons, concordances, and Hew-based commentaries.

BL524 EXEGESIS OF JONAH: Practical application of Hew language skills by performing an in-depth exegesis of the book of Jonah from Hew Scripture

BL526 EXEGESIS OF HABAKKUK: Practical application of Hew language skills by performing an in-depth exegesis of Habakkuk from the Hew Old Testament.

CC500 GSST ORIENTATION: This courses introduces the new student to the GSST Methodology of email, use of Subject Line, internet research, the GSST website, and integral writing skills.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION COURSES

CE501 INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: This course provides an examination of the Biblical precepts for such a discipline. Involves the student in actual “how to” projects.

CE503 THE MINISTER/DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: The role of the Christian educator as head of the educational ministry of the local assembly. This includes an introduction to administrative and management techniques as applied to the Christian education ministry.

CE504 PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: A thorough examination of  the various methods and means by which Christian education is delivered to the church.

CE510 PHILOSOPHY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: Provides students with opportune to examine biblical passages and past/current Christian educational philosophies as they develop their own philosophy of Christian Education.  Should be taken toward the end of the student's educational ministry

CE511 HISTORY AND THEOLOGY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: A study of the historical development of educational thought and expression with emphasis placed on the  emerging educational theories and practices which have influenced Christian education in the U.S 

CE512 TEACHING METHODS: An examination of the principles of teaching and learning. It allows the student to put these principles into practice in their ministry (6 Units) 

CE513 EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH: This course acquaints the student with the entire educational structure of the local church.  Contains methods and principles of the educational ministry 

CE516 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION POSITION PAPER: The writing of the student's own philosophy of Christian Education is purposed here.  This course should be taken toward the end of the educational experience.

CE518 CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT: Evaluation, selection, and development of materials for use in the curriculum of the local church.

CE611 BIBLE TEACHING METHODS: A study of teaching based on evidence found in the Bible.

CE613 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION OF CHILDREN: A study of child development with implications for Christian instruction.  Organizations for children in grades one through six will be considered.

CE614 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION OF YOUTH: Provides extensive guidance in helping student and churches develop effective Youth Ministries.  Assists in the identification of problems facing youth daily.  Provides approaches whereby churches can provide opportunities for youth spiritual growth and service.

CE615 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION OF ADULTS: Provides guidelines for students to develop a credible Christian educational ministry for adults.  Deals with factors related to maturity and service for adult believers.

CE621 SPIRITUAL LIFE AND MOBILIZATION: An intensive study of the imperative for Christian service.

CA511 CHURCH ADMINISTRATION: Provides insights and skills in management by objectives, goal tending, budget building, stewardship programs, communication among staff (both professional and volunteer), time management, and related matters arising from the needs of the participants.

CA512 WORSHIP: Study of worship, its principles, and its role in Christianity.  The course will develop skills in planning, directing, and evaluating worship opportunities, including the use of music and other media.

CA513 ADMINISTRATION OF EVANGELISM AND MISSIONS: A survey of the major administrative challenges involved in the establishment and operation of an effective evangelism outreach program.

CA521 CHURCH BUILDING AND FINANCE: Studies the financial challenges facing the growing church. Includes an introduction to principles and practices of financial management, sources and methods of raising capital, allocation of funds within the local church, cash flow analysis, and capital budgeting techniques.

CA522 CHURCH STAFF: The elements of managing (including planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling) the church staff (both professional and  volunteer). Particular emphasis is placed upon organizing and actuating responsibility of  authority, delegation, decentralization, the role of line staff relationship, committees, organizational charting, formal and informal organization, communication, and reaction to change.

CA523 CHURCH GROWTH: Examination of ideas for the growth of the church. Examination of evangelism church growth from the perspective of maintaining active attendance of those already on the membership. Examines growth through building programs to facilitate more people attending the local church.

CA611 UNIQUE CHRISTIAN EDUCATION MINISTRIES: Exposes the student to educational ministries of the church, those outside the church, and Christian organizations with which the church may cooperate.

CA621 CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP: Introduces the student to leadership principles and methods.  Characteristics of Christian leadership is examined.

DIRECTED RESEARCH

RE511 RESEARCH METHODS: A graduate level course in research skills focusing on library techniques. Students  will learn to improve and refine techniques of accessing information using both computers and conventional  methods. Students will be required to research, organize, and prepare several brief reports of graduate  quality during the course.  THE COURSE IS REQUIRED OF ALL GRADUATE AND POST GRADUATE STUDENT WHO HAVE NOT SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED RE 111 OR ITS EQUIVALENT.

RE531 MASTER'S THESIS OR PROJECT: This culmination of the candidate's graduate study provides opportunity for demonstration of ability to present information in a scholarly style and format consistent with the student's academic level of accomplishment.  Detailed information may be obtained from the text Research Manual, by Dr. Naomi  Torrez, which is published by Golden State School of Theology.

RE931 GRADUATE DOCTORAL PROPOSAL/DISSERTATION OR PROJECT: This course includes the Proposal for the Doctoral Dissertation or Project and the actual completion of that Dissertation or Project.  Formulates the framework for the document and the step-by-step completion of the work. This 150 pages minimum document must be footnoted and include an extensive Bibliography (at least 50 outside sources). This work represents the culmination of the Candidate's educational experience. The Dissertation or Project must deal exclusively with the major area of study.  For information, refer to the text, Research Manual, by Dr. Naomi Torrez, published by Golden State School of Theology.

EV511 PERSONAL EVANGELISM: Methods of sharing the gospel of the Christian faith with the lost.  The Bible is incorporated in various methods of personal witnessing.

ME511 INTRODUCTION TO MISSIONS: The philosophy of missions, independent and denominational mission boards and their organization, procedures, methods of evangelism; training the nationals in Christian leadership; practical challenges which missionaries face while on the field.

ME512 HISTORY OF MISSIONS: The Biblical basis for missions. The historical and modern view of missions with an  emphasis on the past 50 years.

ME611 MISSIONS ADMINISTRATION: Business management of Christian organizations, especially missions; effective use of personnel, funds, time, and other resources.

ME631 CROSS CULTURAL MINISTRIES: An examination of the Biblical precepts and which guide such ministries.

NT511 Survey of the New Testament: An intensive  study of the 27 books of the New Testament.

NT512 INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW TESTAMENT: Detailed study of the development and canonicity of the New  Testament.  Special emphasis is given to the answering of critical problems. This includes a survey of the apocryphal, deuterocanonical, and secular writings of the first through the fourth centuries which support the formulation of the New Testament canon.

NT513 PASTORAL EPISTLES: A detailed study of Paul's  Epistles to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon, with emphasis on his instructions concerning the work of the  ministry and organization and discipline of the   Church. Prerequisite: NT 212 or enrollment at the  Graduate level.

NT514 ANALYSIS OF ROMANS: A contextual method study giving particular attention to the doctrinal, spiritual, and practical aspects of Paul's most  systematic explanation of the Gospel.

NT515 ANALYSIS OF HEBREWS: An expositional study of the epistle emphasizing the superiority and the priesthood of Jesus.  Particular attention is given to the relationship between the Old and New Covenants.  Problems of authorship are discussed, as is  the practical application of this document to the demands of daily Christian living. NT516 SURVEY OF PAULINE EPISTLES: A chronological examination of Paul's writings with an emphasis on the development and analysis of Pauline Theology.

NT517 GENERAL EPISTLES: A systematic analysis of the seven epistles of James, Peter, John and Jude.  Emphasis on the historical background, doctrinal development, and practical applications of each.

NT518 REVELATION: An inductive study with special attention to prophetic analysis and  relevance for today. Detailed emphasis is made on eschatology and analysis of the book by independent  research. Frequent reference is made to the various schools of interpretation in the determination of the symbolism employed.

PASTORAL MINISTRY AND COUNSELING  COURSES

PM501 THE PASTORAL OFFICE: The Pastor’s call, family and personal life, call to the local church, time to terminate a pastorate and the relationship of that office to the rest of the church family. General administrative duties, scheduled church programs, and public relations of the church in the community. Selection and training of salaried and unsalaried assistants.

PM511 HOMILETICS: A graduate level laboratory course in which the student will develop a number of sermons. Sermons which will be developed and taught include expository, topical, biographical, textual, and others.

PM512 ETHICS: Systematic study of the standards of right and wrong, consideration of ethical issues from a Biblical perspective or moral behavior. Special emphasis on particular ethical challenges facing Christians in today’s world.

PM550 ORGANIZATIONAL FINANCE: An examination of the theory and practice of sound organizational structure as related to financial stability.

PM531 SERMON PREPARATION: Methods and techniques of effective sermon preparation. Opportunity to prepare a number of sermons during the course. Sermons will be evaluated by the personal Mentor and at least one other person.

PC501 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY: A study of the nature of man and human behavior. Various factors associated with the development of human personality and behavior problems will be examined.

PC511 INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELING: Examination of the  principles and techniques of counseling and their application to the work of pastors and Christian leader whose responsibility is to analyze and give counsel to those with emotional, social, and spiritual  problems., Designed to lay the foundation for further  specialized work in the area of Pastoral Counseling.

PC512 SOLUTION BASED COUNSELING: The Biblical methodology of handling counseling needs through a pro-active approach on the part of both the counselor and counselee. Prerequisite:   PC511

PC513 PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION: The religious characteristics, problems, and needs of the individual in  the various stages of the human cycle will be examined in the light of the concepts of developmental  PSYCHOLOGY. Giving consideration to the function of  various religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices  against the background offered by modern PSYCHOLOGY.

PC514 CHILD PSYCHOLOGY (DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY): The physical, mental, emotional, and social development of the individual with special emphasis on the  years from infancy to adolescence will be examined. General principles of development are carefully considered and applied to specific case studies. Factors  are noted which affect the child's development.  Prerequisite: PC211.

PC515 GUILT AND GRACE: Intensive study of the PSYCHOLOGY of sin and guilt, and the practical application of the biblical doctrine of grace.

PC516 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF LOVE: The phenomenon and effects of love are examined from biblical perspective.

PC517 LAY COUNSELING: Detailed study of the selection and training of lay persons for ministry in the counseling programs of the church. How to select and  what to teach. Prerequisite: PC511.

PC518 INTRODUCTION TO PASTORAL COUNSELING: An intermediate study of the principles and techniques of counseling and their specific application to the work of pastors and Christian leaders whose responsibility  is to analyze and give counsel to those with social,  emotional, and spiritual problems. Prerequisite PC511.

PC527 & PC528 ISSUES IN COUNSELING I&II: Application of theoretical therapeutic counseling techniques by pastors and other Christian leaders to specific areas of pastoral care, such as pre-marital and family counseling, ministering to the chemically dependent, ministering to families, crisis  intervention, an conflict management.   PREREQUISITE: PC511

PC531, PC532 PRE-MARITAL COUNSELING and MARRIAGE AND FAMILY COUNSELING: Two Semester course providing  intensive study of the principles and methods of pastoral counseling in the areas of pre-marriage and marriage problems.  Includes a detailed study of the purpose, fulfillment, and basis of marriage, showing the principles that produce lasting harmony in marriage, and elements that produce a meaningful courtship and its relation to marriage. Procedures  for training and helping people in successful family life are studied.  The first Semester emphasizes courtship processes and pre-marital problems. PC540 DEALING WITH DEATH AND GRIEF: Emphasis is placed on the emotional state of the dying and the grieving.  Particular emphasis is placed on the Christian perspective. Procedure in counseling the dying and the bereaved. The ministry of counseling  through the church in this vital area of human distress is central to this course.   PREREQUISITE: PC511

PC542 CRISIS COUNSELING: Provides study of counseling techniques for persons who are undergoing crisis in their lives. Subjects covered include rape, abortion, childlessness, child abuse, spouse beating, and handicap  suddenly occurred because of illness or accident.

PC543 THE BIBLE IN COUNSELING: Emphasis on how the proper use of the Bible alone can aid the pastor in helping others solve their problems. Critical examination of the Biblical issues are central to the successful completion of this course.  PREREQUISITE: PC511

TH511, TH512 SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY I & II: A two Semester survey of the major divisions of systematic theology. Students who plan to specialize in theology must take these courses.

TH514 BIBLIOLOGY: In-depth study of the internal and external evidence for the revelation, inspiration, illumination, preservation, infallibility, and absolute authority of the Bible. PREREQUISITE: TH511, TH512

TH515 THEOLOGY PROPER: Exposition of the doctrine of God. Scriptural and extra-biblical evidence for the existence of God. This course also examines the attributes of God, his interaction with man, and His Person as God the Father.   PREREQUISITE: TH511, TH512 

TH516 CHRISTOLOGY: Detailed consideration of the scriptural doctrines concerning the second Person of the Godhead, including His divinity, humanity, and eternal priesthood.  The teaching and works of  Christ are summarized with an emphasis on His atoning death, burial, and resurrection. PREREQUISITE: TH511, TH512

TH527 NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY: Survey of the major divisions of biblical theology in the New Testament.  Includes synoptic theology, theology of the Gospel of Luke and Acts, the theologies of James, Paul, Peter, and John. TH532 THE THEOLOGY OF PRAYER: An examination of prayer in the light of the biblical examples and teaching. This course will lead to a more deep and genuine prayer life. PREREQUISITES; TH511, TH512

TH533 CHRIST IN THE OLD TESTAMENT: An in-depth study of the Person and Work of Christ as revealed in the Old Testament. Special attention is given to the Theophanies presented in the Old Testament.

TH541 DISPENSATIONS AND COVENANTS: Detailed study of man's response in obedience to God during the periods of Innocence, Conscience, Human Government,  Promise, Law, Church and Kingdom. Includes an examination of God's covenants with His People.

TH554 APOLOGETICS: The importance of the defense of the bible is discussed in this study.

TH560 THE DOCTRINE OF HOLINESS: An extensive examination of this vital doctrine of Christianity

TH563 DISPENSATIONS: A positive presentation of   the dispensationalist system of biblical interpretation.  Examines the importance of this approach in order to develop and maintain a constant hermeneutic.  Presented as an essential part of the historical-grammatical interpretation.

TH612 APOCALYPTIC LITERATURE: A study of the end times and their relationship to the church and Christianity throughout the ages.

POST-GRADUATE COURSES

Post-Graduate courses are designated by the “900" series of numbers.  However, they are not listed  as separate courses in this catalog. All courses offered on the Graduate Level are offered at the Post-Graduate level. The difference between a Graduate and Post-Graduate course is measured in the quality and quantity of written assignments, collateral reading, and added research. Additionally, many of the Post-Graduate courses are often delineated from the Graduate courses by the use of the term “ADVANCED.” For instance, a course at the graduate level may be titled “Pneumatology.” On the Post-Graduate level the course may be listed as “ADVANCED PNEUMATOLOGY,” or “PNEUMATOLOGY” and have a “900" series number.
